از کاتتر قلبی می‌توان هم به عنوان یک ابزار تشخیصی و هم به منظور درمان استفاده کرد. شایع‌ترین کاربرد تشخیصی آنژیوگرافی بررسی آناتومی قلب به ویژه سرخرگ‌های کرونری آن می‌باشد. از طریق عکس‌برداری در طول کاتترگذاری قلبی، پزشکان انسداد رگ‌های خونی را تشخیص می‌دهند و همچنین اندازه و موقعیت انسدادها را مشخص می‌کنند. گزینه‌‌های درمانی برای انسداد سرخرگ‌های کرونری عبارتند از درمان دارویی و پیروی از شیوه سالم زندگی، جراحی، و یا درمان در حین انجام آنژیوگرافی. برای مثال پزشک در صورت رویت پلاک در داخل سرخرگ‌ها، آنژیوپلاستی بالونی را ممکن است به عنوان بخشی از کاتترگذاری در قلب به منظور تسهیل گردش خون انجام دهد . علاوه بر این، پزشک ممکن است برای بهبود گردش خون در یک سرخرگ مسدود از استنت (فنر) استفاده نماید. اگر بعد ازکاتترگذاری مشخص شود که رگ‌های خونی شما نیاز به بازسازی با استفاده از عمل جراحی دارند، پزشک با شما درباره جراحی پیوند بای‌پس سرخرگ کرونری قلب صحبت خواهد کرد. جراح قلب در برنامه‌ریزی درمان جراحی، از اطلاعات حاصل از تصاویر بدست آمده در طی آنژیوگرافی استفاده خواهد کرد.
