پژوهشگران میگویند زنان با سابقه سنگ کلیه (اگرچه به میزان متوسط اما از نظر آماری قابل توجه)، بیشتر در معرض بیماریهای عروق کرونر قلب (CHD) هستند. البته این امر در مردان صادق نیست.
در یک بررسی بیش از ۲۴۰ هزار از نفر بدون سابقه اولیه CHD نزدیک ۹ سال مورد پیگیری قرار گرفتند. حدود ۲۰هزار نفر آنان هم در بدو مطالعه و هم در مدت پیگیری سابقه سنگ کلیه داشتند و تقریبا ۱۷ هزار موردشان در مدت پیگیری دچار CHD شدند. بعد از تعدیل چند متغیری، مشخص شد زنان با سابقه سنگ کلیه بیشتر در معرض خطر CHD بودند، با این حال سنگ کلیه با CHD در مردان همراه نبود. محققان اظهار میدارند وجود بیماریهای متابولیکی ارثی ناشناخته که سبب بروز سنگ کلیه و بیماریهای قلبی میشود ممکن است زمینه ساز ارتباط بین این دو بیماری در زنان باشد.
