تپش (طپش) قلب به معنی آگاهی از ضربان قلب خود است. علیرغم تپش و فعالیت مداوم و بی‌وقفه قلب ، این فعالیت نباید توسط خود فرد احساس شود. به عبارت دیگر انسان اصلاً نباید متوجه تپش قلب در بدن خود باشند. پس هرگاه فرد احساس بکند که قلب درون قفسه سینه در حال تپش می‌باشد، دچار تپش قلب شده است و ربطی به تعداد ضربان قلب ندارد.
مقدمه:
قلب نوعی تلمبه ای است که خون بوسیله آن در بدن جریان می‌یابد. قلب در هر تپش تقریبا صد سانتیمتر مکعب خون را در بدن پخش می‌کند. روزانه حدود ۱۰ هزار لیتر خون بوسیله این تلمبه در درون رگهای هدایت می‌شود. در مدت عمر متوسط یک انسان شاید ۲۵۰ میلیون لیتر خون بوسیله قلب، تلمبه زده شود. طول مدت هر دوره انقباض و انبساط قلب انسان، ذر حدود ۱ ثانیه است. بنابراین، قلب روزی حدود صدهزار بار می‌‌تپد .
احساس تپش قلب:
تپش قلب به صورتهای گوناگون نظیر کوبیدن، لرزیدن ، تپیدن و … احساس می‌شود. تپش قلب در افراد ممکن است با رخ دادن ضربانی غیر عادی اغلب در قفسه سینه،گردن یا گلو نیز همراه باشد. برخی ذکر می‌کنند که قلبشان هری می‌ریزد یا بعضی می‌گویند که قلبشان چند دقیقه تاپ‌تاپ می‌زند و دوباره به حالت عادی بر می‌گردد. در برخی نیز تپش قلب به صورت دائم احساس می‌شود. احساس تپش قلب همیشه به معنی سرعت بالای ضربان قلب (تاکی کاردی) نیست بطوریکه در سرعت ضربان خیلی پایین (برادی کاردی) هم ممکن است احساس تپش قلب وجود داشته باشد. تپش قلب ممکن است بیانگر یک بیماری جدی باشد یا اهمیت چندانی نداشته باشد.
