استرس تست تالیوم، نشان می‌دهد که در طی ورزش، چگونه خون در عضله قلب جاری می‌شود. استرس تست تالیوم هرگونه کاهش جریان خون در قسمت‌های مختلف قلب در اثر انسداد سرخرگ کرونری را نشان می‌دهد و در ارزیابی عوارض پس از حمله قلبی، بررسی تاثیر روش‌های به کار رفته به منظور گشودن سرخرگ‌های کرونری و بررسی سایر علت‌های درد قفسه سینه به کار می‌رود.
به این بررسی همچنین اسکن پرفوزیون (پرفوزیون عبارتست از جریان خون در یک اندام یا بافت خاص) یا استرس تست ایزوتوپی نیز گفته می‌شود (تالیوم و تکنسیوم دو تا از شایع‌ترین ایزوتوپ‌ها یا مواد رادیواکتیو مورد استفاده در این‌گونه بررسی‌ها می‌باشند).
همانند سایر روش‌های اسکن هسته‌ای، تالیوم یا یک ماده ردیاب دیگر به جریان خون تزریق شده و از طریق جریان خون به قلب می‌رود و از آنجا وارد سلول‌های عضلانی قلب می‌شود. تصاویر حاصل از اسکن نشان می‌دهند که چه قدر خون وارد قسمت‌های مختلف قلب می‌شود. اگر خون‌رسانی در قسمت خاصی از قلب کاهش یافته باشد، این یافته نشان‌دهنده انسداد سرخرگ کرونری می‌باشد. اگر خون به قسمتی از عضله قلب وارد نشود احتمالا آن قسمت بافت مرده (اسکار ) ناشی از حمله پیشین قلبی می‌باشد. جریان خون در زمان استراحت و بعد از استرس ایجاد شده توسط دارو با هم مقایسه می‌شود. این بررسی نباید در طی دوران حاملگی انجام شود.
