آنژیوگرافی یک روش تصویربرداری با استفاده از اشعه ایکس می‌باشد. در این روش یک ماده حاجب وارد قلب یا رگ‌های خونی می‌شود. به منظور انجام یک آنژیوگرافی، پزشک یک کاتتر قلبی را وارد بدن شما خواهد کرد. نوک این کاتتر به سمت بطن چپ و یا به سمت مدخل سرخرگ کرونری هدایت خواهد شد. سپس یک ماده حاجب یددار به بدن تزریق می‌شود تا پزشک بتواند جریان خون را در درون این ساختارها مشاهده نماید. برخی افراد نسبت به رنگ حاوی یُد حساسیت دارند. وقتیکه این رنگ وارد بطن چپ می شود، ممکن است شما احساس گرما بکنید.
انجام کاتترگذاری تشخیصی و تهیه آنژیوگرام در حدود ۱ساعت وقت لازم دارد، ولی شما باید بیشتر یا تمام یک روز را صرف انجام این بررسی نمایید. بعد از انجام این بررسی باید استراحت کنید تا آثار ماده بی‌هوشی از بدن شما محو شود. باید مایعات زیادی بنوشید تا به دفع ماده حاجب از بدن کمک نمایید.
کاربرد آنژیوگرافی
آنژیوگرافی نحوه پمپاژکردن قلب، شکل قلب و قسمت‌های داخلی قلب را نشان می‌دهد و همچنین نشان می‌دهد که آیا عدم کارکرد صحیح دریچه‌های قلبی منجر به تنگی یا نارسایی دریچه شده است یا خیر؟
اگر ماده حاجب وارد سرخرگ‌های کرونری قلب بشود، آنژیوگرفی نشان می‌دهد که آیا تنگ شدگی یا انسداد این سرخرگ‌ها باعث کاهش یا قطع جریان خون شده است یا خیر؟
